WS2818 is a 3-channel LED driver control circuit, its internal include intelligent digital port data latch and signal reshaping amplification drive circuit. Also include a precision internal oscillator and a 12V voltage programmable constant current control part, which achieves highly consistent color effect.

WS2818 has strong features in Signal Break-point Continuous Transmission, it adopts dual signal transmission, these signals are able to work together without interaction. The user can select the first chip DIN/BIN as the control signal input pin, and the follow-up cascade chips will automatically identify the output signal released by the first chip which not to affect the whole display effect.

WS2818 adopts Single-line Return-to-Zero communication protocol. After the chip gets power-on reset, the DIN port receive data from controller, the first chip collects initial 24bit data then sent to the internal data latch, the other data which reshaping by the internal signal reshaping amplification circuit sent to the next cascade pixel through the DO port. The data reduced 24bit after transmitted through every pixel. Since WS2818 adopts auto-reshaping transmit technology, making the pixel cascade numbers are not limited to the signal transmission, but to signal transmission speed. When BIN works as control signal receiving interface, its control data is 24bit more than the DIN interface, so as to ensure that the two ways to control the number of pixels is the same

Based on the received 24bit data, the internal data latch generates different duty cycle control signals in the OUTR, OUTG, OUTB port. All chips synchronous send the received data to each segment when the DIN port input a reset signal. It will receive new data again After the reset signal finished. Ws2813 Addressable Break-point RGB LED Strip

This post is about the WS2813 LED strip, which is an addressable and breakpoint continue RGB LED strip. The information in this post also works with other similar LED strips, such as strips of the WS28XX family, Neopixel strip and others.

Introducing the WS2813 LED Strip

The WS2813 addressable LED strip comes in several varieties that differ in size, sealant or LED density. Choose the one that best fits your purposes.

In the following figure you can see my WS2813 LED strip. It is 5 meters long and the LEDs are enclosed in a weatherproof silicone. So, they can be left outside at the rain and dust without any problem.

In my opinion, this is the coolest type of LED strips. You can control the brightness and the color of each LED individually, which allows you to produce amazing and complex effects in a simple way.

This LED strip is made by WS2813 LEDs wired in series. These LEDs have a IC built right into the LED. This allows a communication via a one-wire interface. This means that you can control lots of LEDs using just one digital pin of your Arduino.

In the following figure you can see the chip inside the LED. The LED is an RGB LED and works like so.

This kind of strips are very flexible and can be cut to any length you want. As you can see, the strip is divided into segments, and each segment contains one RGB LED.
You can adjust its size by cutting the strip with a scissors in the right place (the proper places to cut the strip are marked).
These strips come with connectors at each end . I’ve decided to cut the connectors, and solder header pins. It’s more handy if you want to connect the strip to an Arduino or to a breadboard.

Powering the WS2813 LED Strip

The LED strip should be powered using a 5V power source. At 5V, each LED draws about 50mA, when set to its full brightness. This means that for every 30 LEDs, the strip may draw as much as 1.5 A. Make sure you select a power source that matches the strip’s needs.

These are awesome 8×8 individually addressable RGB matrix panels. The 24v RGBW LED strip light provides the ultimate control of colors; while having access to red, green and blue, you can also have the choice of either warm white or natural white. A genuine white light is generated with the use of RGBW strip. This is ideal for use with interior design, if a room is lit by warm white lights and the RGBW channel is desired to match the rest of the color temperature, this isn’t a problem at all – it can be decorative as well as practical.

Sold in a 5 meter roll, the rgbw LED strip lights can be easily cut to length to fulfill the exact desired length required. Unfortunately, the RGBW LED strip light is only available in IP20; this means it is suitable for use anywhere that is dry and where it won’t come into contact with any water whatsoever. For example, for use in a kitchen or bathroom, there would be concern that the strip light could come into contact with water so due to the IP rating of this trip channel, it unfortunately wouldn’t be able to be placed in a kitchen or bathroom.

5050 SMD Epistar high lumen LED’s are used on these particular strip lights. The high quality LED’s are 50% brighter than most LED’s used on conventional strips and have a very low depreciation time. Combined with the fact that the strip channel is 24 Volts, the RGB 5050 LED Strip lights are able to shine brighter for longer.

Unlike most RGBW LED Strips, ours features a unique LED Chip. Each LED on the strip has an integrated design with a dedicated white light portion and color changing portion. First let me introduce the ws2813 addressable led chip:
1, General Description:

  WS2813 is an intelligent control LED light source that the control circuit and RGB chip are integrated in a package of 5050 components. Its internal include intelligent digital port data latch and signal reshaping amplification drive circuit. Also include a precision internal oscillator and a 12V voltage programmable constant current control part, which achieves highly consistent color effect.

  The data transfer protocol use single NZR communication mode. After the pixel power-on reset, the DIN port receive data from controller, the first pixel collect initial 24bit data then sent to the internal data latch, the other data which reshaping by the internal signal reshaping amplification circuit sent to the next cascade pixel through the DO port. After transmission for each pixel, the signal to reduce 24bit. Every pixel adopts auto-reshaping transmit technology, making the pixel cascade numbers are not limited to the signal transmission, only relate to the speed of signal transmission.

  The BIN receives the data signal, and then compare the data with the DIN side after phagocytosis of 24bit data, if DIN do NOT receive the signal, then switching to BIN for receiving the input signal, which ensure that any the IC’s damage does not affect the signal cascade transmission and make the BIN in state of receiving signal until restart after power-off.

What LED Light Panel Color Temperature You Should Use for Your Project?

Whether you’re using an LED light panel as your sole source of light or to create visual appeal, you’ll want to consider color temperature. Color temperature refers to where the color falls on the Kelvin spectrum between blue and red. Blue temperatures are cooler with higher Kelvin ratings while red temperatures are warmer, and there’s a right time to use color of a specific range.

 

When you buy LED light panels, you’ll typically want natural light if you’re using the lights indoors where many people will be reading and especially if there is no source of natural light available. This is around the 5500K ranges. If you want to promote a relaxed atmosphere for your staff and clients, even warmer light in the range of 2,000K might be preferable. Restaurants, for example, are among the type of businesses who want to keep customers relaxed. The right shade of blue, however, also has a calming effect and might be more appropriate when you’re using LED light panels as decoration rather than the main light source.

 

Cooler white or blue lights are often better if you’re showcasing a product or want to provide brighter light in cramped spaces. For example, when you mount LED light panels under cabinets to light up the space between the cabinet and tabletop below, a warm light temperature might not cut it. Furthermore, cool lights offer stark contrast, especially when paired with black or white backgrounds. The Difference Between Low & High Quantity Led Lights

50000 hours is very big amount of time. Does each led light stand to this standard? Almost all manufacturers write those big figures in product description. But what is the reality?

Reality is not always same as promising in all LED lights. Forget the warranty; one or two years are just 10% of the total working hours. What is the life after the warranty period? What if you are commercial user?

Customer is not always getting what they expect from cheap products. So what to consider when choosing between low and high quality LED lights?
Weight

This might be weird but this is true, You can’t get good quality in very low weight product. As all LED lights require good heat dispassion, It can’t be accomplished without good amount of aluminum. Thin heat sink can provide more area in less weight, but it can’t transfer enough heat for the removal. Only active (fan based) cooling provides solution to this. Some china based producers provide 12-20W lights in very low weight that feels like plastic body. These products won’t perform well even in small span of time.
LED Chip

LED chips are manufactured by various big and small enterprises in the world. Japan and USA based suppliers make highest quality for longer life and more reliability. All is the matter of materials used in making chip. Larger chip provide more lights, good stability against current variations, but it costs more. Cheap and small led chip provides less light and stability. Ceramic COB lights are totally different in terms of size, they use multiple small chips to provide more lights and stability.
Power supply

This is the heart of LED lightings. LEDs are kind of semiconductor that needs to be driven with carefully and according to ratings. Led needs to be driven with constant current DC supply for longer life. It is technical stuffs, but if you want to know here is the link:
What makes LED driver unreliable? Low quality components and low life capacitors makes them unreliable. Non-branded Chinese LED driver use regular capacitors which work for only 1000 hours at elevated temperature. We at Charlston Lights always calculate life of capacitors to work for more than 10 years.

Light quality

Another costly thing in LED lights is rare earth phosphor. Cheap producer use low quality phosphor to lower the cost. If you see spot light with little different colors of white, it might be sign of low quality. Maintaining same colors in white is challenging task for LED producers. Color rendering is also point to be considered. Cheap LED lights generally don’t have good CRI, As good CRI also requires high quality phosphor.

Optics

Many people choose LED lights as a new trend in interiors. They really don’t consider what kind of lights they need. Most of the cheap LED lights have same optics for multiple requirements. A spot light can’t make enough illumination in drawing room. Opaque cover is not always for good lighting. It might be used to hide cheap components in Lights.

Construction

Finally all together, how they construct LED lights is also important. Design, look, feel and strength need to be checked at time of choosing LED. If paint or powder coating is not applied well, there might be good chance that inside construction are also cheap. Chinese manufacturer produce large amount of products to compete price. Do You Know The SMD Led Chip?

The SMD chips, or “Surface Mounted Device” chips, have become very popular due to their versatility. SMD LEDs have been used to create everything from light bulbs to strip lights, and even missed call indicators on cell phones. These chips are much smaller in comparison to the DIP technology, which tends to give them the added versatility over DIP diodes. SMD technology also supports chips with more complicated designs, such as SMD 5050 chips (depicted to the left), that have RGB capabilities on a single chip. This is very powerful for color combinations, as opposed to the DIP technology, which can only display one color per device. The technology does not take the bullet shaped design from DIP LEDs, and is closer to that of a flat, square computer chip. It is also worth noting that SMD chips can have more than just two contacts (one anode and one cathode). SMD chips can have 2, 4 or 6 contacts, depending on the number of diodes on the chip. With the SMD design, there is an individual circuit for each diode. For example, SMD 5050 chips have 3 diodes on the chip, which translates to 3 circuits and a total of 6 contacts.

SMD chips that we see in light bulbs and strip lights will typically produce between 4 to 5 lumens per diode on a chip (such as a 3528, single diode chip). These chips will typically run at either 12v or 24v, with 12v being the most common. Individually these chips can pull between 0.05w to 0.08w (single diode, 3528) up to between 0.15w to .24w (three diode, 5050). This means these chips can produce between 50 and 100 lumens per watt depending on the particular chip.

3528smd led chip
3528 LED light strips are named after the dimensions of each chip: 3.5×2.8mm. The small size of 3528 chips is important, because it allows the chips to be placed very closely together on LED strips to create a smoother lighting effect in comparison to a 5050 LED strip. Each chip contains one light-emitting diode, and uses about .08 Watts to produce roughly 4 lumens. 3528’s are great for accent lighting and decorations, but typically aren’t used as a primary light source. They are commonly used in indoor home applications such as stair lighting, under-cabinet lighting, media lighting, and more! Since each chip only contains 1 light-emitting diode, 3528’s are single-color light strips. Our 3528 LED Light Strips are available in Cool White, Warm White, Red, Green, and Blue.

5050smd led chip

5050 LED light strips are also named after the dimensions of each chip: 5.0×5.0mm. The larger chip size of 5050’s mean that they’re spaced farther apart than 3528’s, but actually produce more light per chip. Each chip contains 3 light-emitting diodes, and uses approximately .24 Watts to produce about 12 lumens. Because 5050’s include 3 light-emitting diodes, they can come in single or multi colored strip lights. A single-colored 5050 chip includes 3 diodes of the same color to give more light than a comparable 3528 strip. Alternatively, a multi-colored 5050 chip includes 1 red, 1 blue, and 1 green diode. The brightness of individual diodes on a single chip can then be adjusted to produce any color on the spectrum! Multicolored 5050 LED strips require the use of an RGB LED controller; whereas single-colored LED lights can be connected directly to a DC power source. As our brighter LED strips, 5050’s are great for more luminous accent lighting, task lighting, sign lighting, and can even be used as the primary light source in some cases.
